Women's Softball Jersey Fit: Why the Cut Matters More Than the Size

Quick answer: a softball jersey cut for girls fits better than a unisex jersey because it is patterned for her frame: a narrower chest and shoulder, a tapered waist and a length that tucks without bunching. On our charts the women's 1-button jersey runs about 1 to 2 inches narrower across the half chest than the men's in the same letter size. Size from inches, not letters: measure a jersey she likes flat, compare it to the softball size chart, and order the size that matches.
Every fall a softball coach somewhere opens a box of new jerseys and finds the same thing: half the team swimming in fabric, a few players who can't lift their arms, and sleeves hanging past the elbow. One parent on r/Softball described their league's jersey sizing as a "complete toss up". Another coach put the root cause in five words: girls are shaped differently.
Most of the time the problem isn't the size a player picked. It's that the jersey was cut from a boy's pattern and given a girl's name. Here's what actually changes in a women's cut, what the numbers look like, and how to size a whole roster without the toss-up.
Unisex usually means a men's pattern
"Unisex" sounds neutral, but in teamwear it almost always means the men's pattern sold to everyone. That pattern is built around broader shoulders, a straighter body from chest to hip and longer sleeves. On a female athlete that shows up in predictable ways:
- Too wide in the shoulders. The shoulder seam drops down the arm, so the sleeve hangs long and the fabric bunches in the armpit when she throws.
- Boxy through the waist. To fit her chest or hips, she sizes up, and now there is extra fabric everywhere else. That extra fabric flaps when she runs and balloons out of the pants after a slide.
- The wrong length. A men's body is cut longer, so a jersey that fits across the chest can sit low on the hips and bunch inside the waistband.
People who wear jerseys in other sports report the same thing from the other side: a women's cut is more fitted, the sleeves are shorter and the neck sits differently. Several say they size up one in a women's cut because it is slimmer. That isn't a flaw. It's the point: the jersey is meant to follow her body, so you pick the size by measurement, not by habit.
What a women's cut changes
Our women's softball jerseys are patterned for the female athlete rather than adapted from a baseball jersey. Across the 1-button, full button, crewneck and V-neck styles, that means:
- A tapered waist that removes the excess bulk a boxy jersey carries, so it stays tucked and doesn't billow.
- Narrower shoulders on the full button style, so the shoulder seam sits on the shoulder and the sleeve falls where it should.
- Raglan sleeves on the 1-button style, which give a full range of motion for pitching and swinging without the fabric pulling across the back.
- An extended tail on the full button style, designed to stay tucked during diving catches and slides.
Women's jerseys run from adult XS to 3XL. For younger players, the girls' crewneck jersey and the other girls' styles are cut for a girl's athletic frame in youth sizes, so a 10U team isn't stuck choosing between a youth boys' jersey and an adult one rolled at the waist.
The numbers: women's vs men's on our charts
Here is the same style, the 1-button jersey, from our own size charts. Measurements are flat garment inches: half chest is measured straight across 1 inch below the armhole, and length runs from the highest point of the shoulder to the hem. All measurements are approximate.
| Size | Women's half chest | Men's half chest | Women's length | Men's length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 17" | 18" | 29" | 29" |
| Small | 19" | 20" | 29" | 30" |
| Medium | 20" | 22" | 30" | 31" |
| Large | 22" | 23" | 31" | 32" |
Two things jump out. First, a women's medium is 2 inches narrower across the half chest than a men's medium, which is 4 inches around the body. That is the boxy fabric that disappears. Second, the women's body is about an inch shorter in most sizes, which is why it tucks cleanly instead of bunching.
It also explains a common mistake. A player who wears a men's small (20" half chest) is closest to a women's medium (20"), not a women's small. If you copy last year's letters from a unisex order onto a women's order, several players will come out a size too tight. Convert by inches, every time. The full charts for every style, including XL to 3XL, are on each product page and in our softball size guides.
For girls' sizes, the 1-button chart runs from 16" half chest and 24" length in youth small to 19" and 25" in youth large. When a player outgrows youth large, compare her measurements to the women's chart rather than assuming women's XS: the biggest jump between youth and women's sizes is in length.
How to size a whole team without the toss-up
The leagues that end up with a box of wrong sizes almost always collected sizes the same way: a sign-up form with a letter dropdown. Here is a better process that works for 12 players or 120.
- Pick the cut first. Decide women's or girls' styles before anyone picks a size, and tell families which one it is. A letter means nothing until everyone knows which chart it belongs to.
- Measure a jersey, not the player. Ask each family to lay a jersey or athletic shirt she likes flat and measure straight across the chest, 1 inch below the armhole, and from the top of the shoulder to the hem. Those two numbers map straight onto our chart.
- Collect inches, then assign letters. Have families send the measurements along with the size they think they need. Check the two against the chart before you submit the order. This is where you catch the player who listed "small" but measures a medium.
- Decide your between-sizes rule. Our jerseys are made to move, and the women's fit is athletic-contoured with room to layer over compression gear. If a player is between sizes and wears a sliding shirt or compression top underneath, take the larger size. If not, go with the size that matches her chest measurement.
- Keep numbers separate from sizes. Collect jersey numbers on their own line so nobody's number gives away their size. The personalization form handles names and numbers player by player.
- Order the pants by the same method. Pants cause even more fit trouble than jerseys. Our guide to softball pants sizing for girls walks through waist, hip and inseam.
Does the cut really matter for 8U and 10U?
At the youngest ages the differences in body shape are small, and plenty of rec leagues use one jersey for everyone. That is fine. The cut starts to matter once players reach middle school ages and their frames change, and it matters a lot for travel and high school teams where the same jersey gets worn hard through a long tournament weekend.
The bigger issue at young ages is usually length. A youth boys' jersey or a rolled-up adult jersey hangs low and comes untucked on every swing. A girls' style with an extended scoop tail stays put, which is one less thing for a coach to fix between innings.
Getting the jerseys made
Every one of our softball jerseys is sublimated, so your colours, logo, names and numbers are dyed into the fabric and won't crack or peel, and the women's and girls' styles can be matched to the same design so the whole program looks like one team. The softball bundles pair jerseys with pants and other pieces if you want the full uniform in one order.
To start, send us your colours and logo through a softball quick quote and we'll send free design mockups. If you have a bigger program with several age groups, the custom quote form lets you lay out every team at once. Our team will help you match each age group to the right women's or girls' style before anything is made.
Frequently asked questions
Should girls wear a women's cut or unisex softball jersey?
For most players past the youngest age groups, a women's or girls' cut fits better. Unisex jerseys usually use a men's pattern with broader shoulders and a boxier body, so girls size up for their chest or hips and end up with extra fabric everywhere else. A women's cut tapers at the waist and fits the shoulders.
Do women's softball jerseys run small?
They run more fitted than unisex jerseys, which is by design. On our charts the women's 1-button jersey is about 1 to 2 inches narrower across the half chest than the men's in the same letter size, so a player who wears a men's small is closest to a women's medium. Always compare measurements to the softball size chart rather than copying letter sizes across.
How do I measure for a softball jersey?
Lay a jersey or athletic shirt that fits well flat. Measure straight across the chest 1 inch below the armhole (that is the half chest), then measure from the highest point of the shoulder down to the hem. Compare both numbers to the size chart on the product page.
What sizes do your women's and girls' softball jerseys come in?
Women's softball jerseys run from adult XS to 3XL in 1-button, full button, crewneck and V-neck styles. The girls' styles come in youth sizes and are cut for a girl's athletic frame. Each product page has the full size chart.
Should we number jerseys by size?
No. Numbering from smallest to largest size lets anyone work out who wears what, and parents have rightly pushed back on it. Collect numbers separately from sizes, let players give a few choices in order of preference, and let returning players keep their numbers if they want them.
