Softball Pants Sizing for Girls: A Fit Guide That Works

Softball Pants Sizing for Girls: A Fit Guide That Works

Quick answer: size softball pants by the waist first, then check the inseam. Lay a pair that fits her now flat, measure straight across the waistband and from the crotch seam to the hem, and compare those numbers to the softball size chart. The cuff should sit just below the knee and stay there when she squats. If she's between sizes, take the one that fits her waist and hips, because a slightly long leg is easy to live with and a waist that won't snap isn't.

Ask any group of softball parents about pants and you'll hear the same word: the worst. One parent on r/Softball described it exactly: the youth medium fit her everywhere but the waist, and the youth large fit the waist but was too big everywhere else. Another said her daughter's kids' large was too small and the kids' XL was three inches too big.

That isn't your kid's fault and it isn't bad luck. It's what happens when pants are sized off one letter instead of real measurements. Here is how to get it right for one player or a whole roster.

Why softball pants are so hard to size

Three things make softball pants trickier than a jersey:

  • Girls grow in different directions at different times. A 10U player can need a bigger waist and hip long before she needs a longer leg, or the other way round. One letter size can't follow both.
  • Many pants are cut from a boy's baseball pattern. A pant patterned for a boy's frame leaves less room through the hip and seat, so the size that buttons at the waist feels tight when she squats into a fielding stance.
  • Every brand's letters mean something different. Parents regularly report that one brand runs small enough to size up two sizes, while another runs true. A "medium" tells you very little until you see the inches behind it.

The fix is the same in every case: stop shopping by letter and shop by inches.

How to measure for softball pants

You don't need a tailor. You need a tape measure and a pair of pants (any athletic pants) that fit her well right now. Our size chart lists flat garment measurements, so measuring a good pair the same way gives you a straight comparison.

  1. Half waist: lay the pants flat and button them. Measure straight across the waistband from edge to edge. Double it if you want the full circumference.
  2. Hips: measure straight across the widest point of the hips and double it. Use this as a check if she's curvy through the hip or seat, which is where most "fits the waist but not the rest" problems live.
  3. Inseam: measure from the crotch seam down to the bottom hem.

Write the numbers down with her name. If you're a coach, this is the step that saves you the reorder later (more on that below).

Compound softball pant size charts

Both of our softball pants are a high-cuff knicker style patterned for the female athlete, not a boy's baseball pant in a different size. These are the flat measurements from our softball size guide, in inches. All measurements are approximate.

Two things jump out of those charts, and both answer questions parents ask all the time.

The jump from youth to women's. Our Youth L has a 14-inch half waist and a 20-inch inseam. Women's XS starts at 15 and 21. When a girl's waist measures past a Youth L, she moves to the women's chart, and she'll usually pick up an inch of leg at the same time. If she's still small through the leg, that extra inch is fine in a knicker cut because the cuff gathers below the knee.

The leg stays short while the waist grows. Across the whole women's run the inseam only moves from 21 to 23 inches while the half waist moves from 15 to 21. That's on purpose: a knicker is meant to stop below the knee whatever her waist size, so you really are sizing by the waist and hips.

Where softball pants should end

The advice that keeps coming up from experienced softball parents matches how a knicker is built: the leg should end just below the knee, and a little long beats a little short.

Our high-cuff pants have a gathered elastic bottom that sits below the knee and shows off team socks or stirrups. Do this fit check when the pants arrive:

  • Squat test. Have her drop into a fielding stance and a deep catcher's squat. The cuff should stay below the knee. If it rides up above the kneecap, the inseam is too short for her.
  • Slide test. She should be able to get into a slide position without the waist pulling down or the seat feeling tight. Our pants have reinforced double knees, so the knee needs to land where the extra layer is.
  • Waist check. With a belt through the loops, the waistband should sit flat and the jersey should stay tucked through warm-ups. Our pants use a wide non-slip elastic waistband with belt loops, so a small amount of extra room at the waist is handled by the belt.

What to do when she's between sizes

This is the most common situation, so here's a simple rule set:

  • Waist fits, hips are tight: go up one size. A tight seat will split or ride down in a slide long before a loose waist causes any trouble, and the belt takes up the slack.
  • Waist is tight, everything else fits: go up one size. A waist that won't button is a non-starter.
  • Tall and slim: size for the waist, then check the squat test. Because a knicker gathers below the knee, extra length is less of a problem than you'd expect.
  • Older youth player, between Youth L and women's XS: compare her waist to both charts. If she's past a 28-inch waist, she belongs in women's sizing.

Still unsure? Send her measurements with your quote request and we'll tell you which size we'd order. That's what our team is there for.

Collecting pant sizes for a whole team

If you're the coach or team mom ordering for twelve girls, the single biggest mistake is asking parents to "send me her size." You'll get twelve letters from twelve different brands, and some of them will be wrong.

Instead:

  1. Ask for inches, not letters. Send families the three measurements above (half waist, hips, inseam) and a link to the softball size chart.
  2. Match each player to the chart yourself. One person reading every number against the same chart catches the mistakes.
  3. Plan for growth. If you're ordering for a fall-to-summer season, a younger player who sits at the top of her size can move up one so the pants still fit in July.
  4. Order early enough to fix a miss. Read how long custom team uniforms take and work back from your first tournament so there's room for one size swap.

If you're ordering jerseys too, our softball bundles package pants with jerseys and visors, and the jerseys come in women's and girls' cuts so the top fits as well as the bottom.

Picking pants that last a season

Fit is half of it. The other half is whether the pants survive a summer of tournaments. Look for:

  • Heavy fabric. Our Women's High-Cuff Softball Pants and Girls' High-Cuff Softball Pants are a 14 oz polyester that's built to be non-see-through.
  • Reinforced knees. A double layer from thigh to cuff where slides and dives do their damage.
  • Color that doesn't come off. Piping, pinstripes and logos are sublimated into the fabric, so there's nothing to peel.
  • Easy care. Machine wash cold, hang dry, no bleach.

Frequently asked questions

Do softball pants run small?

It depends on the brand. Parents regularly report some brands running a size or two small, which is why letter sizes aren't reliable. Measure a pair that fits her now and compare the inches to the brand's own chart. Our softball size chart lists half waist and inseam for every size.

Where should softball pants hit on the leg?

A knicker-style softball pant should end just below the knee and stay there when she squats or gets into a fielding stance. If the cuff rides up above the knee, the inseam is too short.

When should my daughter switch from youth to women's softball pants?

When her waist outgrows the youth chart. Our Girls' Youth L has a 14-inch half waist (28 inches around); women's XS starts at 15 (30 inches around). If she measures past a Youth L at the waist, move her to women's sizing.

Should I size up softball pants for growth?

If she sits at the top of her size and the season runs many months, going up one size is reasonable. A slightly long leg is fine in a knicker because the cuff gathers below the knee, and a belt handles a little extra room at the waist.

What's the best way for a coach to collect team pant sizes?

Ask families for measurements in inches (half waist, hips and inseam), not a letter size from another brand. Then match every player against the same size chart yourself before you order.
